A little help can make a big difference

Local Family Links might help if…

You care about someone who wants to remain independent at home, but could use a familiar helping hand with everyday things that are becoming harder to manage.

You’re noticing that your loved one is still managing at home, but everyday things are starting to become harder to keep on top of.

You can’t always be nearby when a letter arrives, the TV stops working, a bill needs checking or something around the home needs sorting.

You’d feel reassured knowing one familiar local person can notice what needs attention, remember the important things and follow them through.

Your loved one does not need personal care — they just need practical help, reassurance and a little extra support to help them remain independent at home.

What we can help with

Practical support for everyday life at home

A familiar local Support Assistant gets to know your loved one, their routines and the practical things that matter to them, making it easier to notice what needs attention and help get it sorted.

LFL isn’t another service to navigate. It helps you navigate all the others.

We can work alongside family, carers, healthcare professionals and tradespeople without replacing them or taking over decisions.

Friendly wellbeing visits

A regular familiar visit with time to check how things are going, deal with practical concerns and enjoy relaxed conversation.

  • General wellbeing check and observations logged
  • Friendly conversation with time to listen and understand
  • Any agreed concerns raised with the trusted person
  • Practical next steps identified and followed up

A simple way to stay on top of things

Keeping track of what matters

Alongside our visits, we can help keep track of things that are easy to forget. Each member has a simple LFL calendar at home for planned visits, appointments, important dates, reminders, reviews and agreed practical follow-ups.

We look at the calendar together during visits so everyone knows what is coming up and what still needs attention. With the client's permission, an authorised family member or trusted person can also be kept updated.

Something coming up? Put it on the LFL calendar.

One visible place for the dates and reminders that matter.

One visit, many small things moved forward

Why Local Family Links exists

Built from real family experience

Aaron as a child with his grandmother

My grandmother played a huge part in bringing me up from a young age, so when she became older, I wanted to give her the same care, patience and support she had always given me.

Local Family Links grew from those years of helping my nan, alongside other family members, and from being somebody others often felt comfortable asking for help or advice.

Sometimes it was a bill that did not look right, a confusing letter, the television not working, a phone setting that had changed or a household service that needed sorting out. There were plenty of late-night phone calls because the TV had stopped working, something had appeared on the screen that she did not understand, or a small problem had suddenly become a big worry. I saw first-hand how stressful these things could be for her, even when they might seem simple to somebody else.

Over time, I became one of the people my grandmother relied on to help keep on top of those everyday things — dealing with household bills and services, speaking to companies on her behalf, helping with technology and paperwork, and trying to sort out the small problems before they became bigger ones.

I also began noticing the everyday tasks that were becoming harder for her and looking for practical ways to make them easier. That might mean finding a safer or lighter way to make a cup of tea, looking at simple aids around the home, finding good-quality ready meals that were easy for her to prepare, or researching local services and support that she may not have known were available.

It also meant putting practical arrangements in place so that everyday essentials were easier to manage. I helped organise regular food deliveries and repeat deliveries for essential household or personal items, so things she relied on could arrive when needed without somebody having to remember and arrange everything each time.

Household maintenance was another part of that support. With over 15 years of experience running my own decorating business, I was confident dealing with smaller practical jobs myself and knew when something needed a qualified tradesperson. I could then help find someone suitable, make enquiries and go through the proposed work and costs with my nan before she decided whether to go ahead.

This also meant looking into things such as Attendance Allowance and services including Care & Repair and Delta Wellbeing, where appropriate, to see whether there was extra help available that could make life at home safer, easier or more affordable. We also looked at practical safety measures around the home, including suitable fire and smoke alarm arrangements that could alert me if an alarm was activated, providing another layer of reassurance while she remained at home.

I also saw how easily unnecessary costs could build up. By keeping an eye on what my nan was paying for, I was often able to reduce or remove services she no longer used or did not need, leaving more money available for things that genuinely improved her day-to-day life and that she actually needed.

Just as importantly, it gave the wider family reassurance. They knew there was someone nearby who understood what was going on, could notice when something needed attention and help get it sorted. It also meant family members could spend more of their time simply being family, rather than constantly having to act as customer service agents — chasing providers, fixing technology or dealing with paperwork.

My aim is simple: to use the practical skills, qualifications and experience I gained from helping look after my nan to offer the same kind of dependable support to other loved ones and their families. Local Family Links is built from real day-to-day experience, helping someone stay comfortable, confident and independent at home, dealing with the everyday problems that can cause stress, and giving families the reassurance that someone trusted is there to help.

“Sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference — knowing someone will notice, someone will listen, and someone will help get things sorted.”

What trust looks like in practice

Locally based support, a clear identity, professional boundaries, transparent pricing and proper records. The loved one remains in control through consent and clear choices, and Local Family Links will say when another, free or specialist service is the better route rather than trying to work outside its role.

A simple, reassuring process

How it works

01

A friendly first conversation

A no-obligation chat to understand the situation and see whether Local Family Links could be a good fit.

Read moreShow less

The first step is simply a conversation with the loved one, a family member or another trusted person.

We can talk through what is happening, where a little extra practical help might be useful and any important circumstances or support already in place.

There is no pressure to continue. The aim is simply to understand the situation and decide whether an Initial Assessment would be the right next step.

02

A relaxed Initial Assessment

A free visit to properly understand the loved one, what is already working well and where practical support could make a difference.

If Local Family Links appears suitable, we arrange a free Initial Assessment.

This is a relaxed visit with enough time to understand the loved one’s circumstances, routines, existing support and practical priorities.

We might talk about post and bills, household services, technology, things around the home, support already being received and anything that has been becoming difficult to keep on top of.

It also gives the loved one a chance to meet their Support Assistant and decide whether Local Family Links feels right for them.

03

Making sure the support is right

We look at the whole picture and make sure Local Family Links is the right kind of support.

After the assessment, we consider what has been discussed properly rather than trying to rush decisions during the visit.

Where useful, we can look into practical solutions, services or support that may help.

The outcome may be that the loved one is:

Suitable for LFL

Suitable for LFL alongside other support

Beyond what LFL can safely or appropriately provide

If another form of support needs to be in place first, we will explain the appropriate next steps.

Existing carers or other services do not automatically prevent somebody from using Local Family Links.

04

Agreeing what matters

We agree the practical priorities, what should be kept an eye on and how support should work.

Read moreShow less

Where Local Family Links is suitable, we agree a straightforward support plan with the loved one and, where they have chosen to involve them, their trusted person.

We can agree what should be tackled first, what needs following up, important dates or concerns to keep track of and what information should be shared with a trusted person.

Nothing has to be sorted all at once. Some things take time to understand, research or resolve, and priorities can be worked through gradually.

05

Membership and regular support begins

A familiar Support Assistant starts visiting regularly, getting to know the loved one and helping keep everyday life on track.

Read moreShow less

Local Family Links Membership includes two planned one-hour home visits each month, giving us regular time to check in, notice what has changed and work through the practical things that need attention.

Each visit begins with a friendly welfare check and relaxed conversation.

We then work through agreed priorities and anything that has appeared since the last visit — perhaps letters or bills, a suspicious message, a technology problem, a household issue, an upcoming renewal or something sitting in the LFL pile waiting to be sorted.

Membership also includes one short practical call-out of up to 15 minutes each month.

This is there for smaller things that sometimes cannot sensibly wait until the next planned visit.

Where possible, we will try to make this the same day, although this depends on Support Assistant availability and cannot be guaranteed.

The support does not stop when the Support Assistant leaves the home.

After visits, additional work needed to help move agreed problems towards a resolution can continue from the LFL office.

This may include:

  • researching an issue
  • making agreed calls
  • contacting services or tradespeople
  • checking what support may be available
  • following up something already started
  • preparing information
  • keeping track of an outstanding action

A clear visit report is also prepared, recording what was discussed, observations made, what has been dealt with and what needs to happen next.

The report can be shared with the loved one and, where they have chosen and consented, their trusted person.

Membership is not simply two hours of visits — it is an ongoing practical-support relationship across the month.

06

Keeping everything moving between visits

What is started during a visit does not simply disappear when the hour is over.

Read moreShow less

One of the main benefits of Local Family Links is continuity.

The same familiar Support Assistant gets to know the loved one, their home, their routines and the things that matter to them.

Outstanding actions are kept organised and followed through.

Research and agreed office-based work can continue after a visit, upcoming matters can be kept on the radar, and the next visit builds on what has already happened rather than starting again from the beginning.

Each loved one will also have their own LFL calendar.

This is used to keep track of important dates, reminders and practical matters that need to be remembered.

This may include things such as:

  • renewals
  • appointments
  • household servicing dates
  • follow-up actions
  • other agreed reminders

The LFL calendar should be reviewed and updated at each visit so important things are less likely to be missed.

Where a trusted person is involved, agreed reports and updates can provide a clear picture of:

  • how things have been going
  • observations or concerns noticed
  • what has been dealt with
  • progress on previous actions
  • anything that still needs attention
  • what LFL will follow up next

And when there is very little to deal with, that is fine too.

A quiet month can be a good month.

The purpose of LFL is not to manufacture jobs — it is to provide the reassurance that somebody familiar is visiting, noticing, remembering and helping when something does need attention.

For families near and far

More reassurance, less pressure on you

If your loved one lives independently within the Local Family Links catchment area while you are in Cardiff, Bristol, London, elsewhere in the UK or abroad, it may not be easy to pop in whenever a letter, phone or household problem needs attention. Local Family Links can provide a familiar local presence, while keeping you informed if your loved one has agreed.

Two people in the loop means an extra layer of reassurance. Where agreed, important decisions, costs or changes can be seen by both the loved one and their nominated trusted person before anything goes ahead. It gives another perspective, helps avoid rushed decisions and keeps everyone clear on what has been agreed.

Local Family Links fills the practical support gap between managing entirely alone and requiring formal care, helping people remain independent at home.

One-off practical help

Some larger tasks still fit naturally within the Local Family Links role but need more time than a scheduled visit allows. Larger one-off practical, administration or technology jobs may be agreed and quoted separately in advance.

This may be available to members and, where suitable, to people who do not need ongoing membership. Local Family Links can also help identify or coordinate an appropriate outside provider when a job requires a different trade, qualification or specialist service.

TV & entertainment setup

Help setting up televisions, remotes, Freeview, streaming services, soundbars and making everything simpler to use.

Wi-Fi & internet setup

Help with routers, Wi-Fi problems, improving connectivity and getting devices properly connected around the home.

Phones, tablets & smart technology

Help setting up phones, tablets, Alexa or smart speakers, smart plugs, video calling and other useful connected devices.

Accessible technology

Big-button phones, amplified sound, TV listening options and practical technology that can make everyday use easier.

Home safety & practical installations

Help with simple non-specialist items such as motion lights or key safes where suitable and within Local Family Links’ competence.

Help arranging household services

Help finding and coordinating the right person for jobs outside our own skillsets, such as a plumber, electrician, gardener or other tradesperson.

These practical services can be included within your Local Family Links Membership where they fit within the available time during a scheduled visit.

If a task needs more time, it can either be continued at a future scheduled visit or additional time can be arranged, subject to availability and an extra charge.

Any additional cost will always be discussed and agreed in advance.

Equipment, materials and third-party costs are separate.

Additional support when more time is needed

When appropriate Local Family Links support needs more time than can reasonably fit within the membership, these additional options may be arranged. Every option is subject to availability.

Additional planned one-hour visit

£50

For appropriate Local Family Links support requiring more time than can reasonably fit within the normal membership.

Subject to availability.

Additional short practical call-in of up to 15 minutes

£20

For an additional quick practical task or check-in beyond the included monthly call-in. Same-day attendance may sometimes be possible but is never guaranteed.

Subject to availability.

Agreed out-of-hours practical call-out

£100

For practical, non-emergency situations outside normal hours. Includes travel and up to 30 minutes at the property.

Attendance depends on the Support Assistant’s availability and is not guaranteed on demand.

Local Family Links provides practical, non-medical support at home. It is not an emergency service, a personal-care or regulated social-care service, or a 24/7 service. If there is an emergency or immediate risk to health or safety, the appropriate emergency or professional service should be contacted first.

Larger one-off practical, administration or technology jobs that still fit the Local Family Links role may be agreed and quoted separately in advance. The proposed work and price will be explained before chargeable work begins, and the loved one is free to decline.

Helping home work better

Home Environment Reviews

Sometimes the best way to understand what practical help may be useful is to take a structured look at how everyday life is working around the home — or how well the home may support someone returning after a hospital stay or change in circumstances.

A practical review may consider lighting, access, household layout, obvious maintenance concerns, everyday technology, household items becoming difficult to use, practical safety concerns, existing support and simple improvements that may make daily life easier.

The service has two distinct routes — one for individuals and families, and a separate professional information-gathering service for professionals and public services.

An Independent Living Home Review is included within the Local Family Links Membership where appropriate, and can also be booked separately for £100 when someone wants the practical review without taking out ongoing membership.

Independent Living Home Review

A structured, practical and non-clinical review of everyday life around the home, with a clear report showing what is working well, what may be worth improving and where another service or professional assessment may help. It is not an Occupational Therapy, clinical or medical assessment, or a professional building survey.

Getting in and around the home

Paths, entrances, steps, lighting, key access, everyday obstacles and general accessibility.

Everyday rooms

Household layout, how the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and living space are working, and items that may be becoming difficult to use.

Practical home environment

Loose rugs, cluttered routes, poor lighting, obvious maintenance concerns and other straightforward practical safety issues.

Technology & communication

Phones, Wi-Fi, useful household technology, alarms and communication arrangements.

Household essentials

Heating, electricity, water, food arrangements, deliveries, household access and other practical arrangements where relevant.

Existing aids & support

A factual record of relevant aids, equipment and services already in place and whether additional professional or community support may be worth exploring.

What the report can include

  • Structured review of the home
  • Practical observations clearly recorded
  • Relevant photographs where useful and agreed
  • Straightforward measurements where appropriate
  • Existing equipment and practical arrangements noted
  • Household issues identified
  • Useful services or support worth exploring
  • Matters that may need professional consideration
  • Clear suggested practical next steps
  • Report available to the loved one and, where agreed, their nominated trusted person

Included with Local Family Links Membership

Included as part of your membership where appropriate

An Independent Living Home Review can form part of the normal Local Family Links Membership relationship. The initial practical review provides a clearer picture of how everyday life is working around the home and helps identify priorities for ongoing support.

Relevant matters can then be kept under review during regular visits, with agreed actions followed up as part of the continuing relationship rather than treating the review as a stand-alone report.

  • Initial Home Review where appropriate
  • Ongoing practical observation during regular visits
  • Help progressing agreed practical actions
  • Support accessing appropriate outside services
  • Trusted-person reporting where consent permits

One-off Home Review

£100

One-off visit and Home Review Report

For someone who wants a structured practical review without taking out ongoing Local Family Links Membership. It provides a clear snapshot of practical issues, possible improvements and support worth exploring, but does not include the ongoing continuity and follow-up of membership.

  • Structured home review and written report
  • Practical observations
  • Agreed photographs and straightforward relevant measurements
  • Possible practical next steps
  • Signposting to appropriate services
  • Option to discuss separately agreed practical follow-on work

Equipment, materials, installation, tradespeople and additional work are not included in the £100 price.

What happens next?

1

Simple practical solution

Some issues may have a straightforward, non-specialist solution. Local Family Links can explain suitable options and, where appropriate, recommend an item, provide it on request or quote separately for simple installation within its competence. The loved one is always free to buy elsewhere.

  • motion lighting
  • key-safe arrangements
  • household technology
  • communication equipment
  • straightforward non-specialist improvements
2

Existing, statutory or professional support

Where an issue may require Occupational Therapy, local-authority, NHS, Care & Repair or another professional service, Local Family Links can help identify and explore the appropriate route.

Where equipment or support may be available through statutory or charitable services, we will make this clear rather than automatically directing someone towards a private purchase.

3

Private practical route

Where appropriate, Local Family Links may research options, obtain prices, arrange delivery, identify an appropriate tradesperson or coordinate practical work. The options and any charges will be explained before the loved one decides whether to proceed.

Where a suitable private solution can safely be arranged without specialist clinical assessment, Local Family Links may be able to help progress it. If professional assessment or specification is required, that route must be followed first.

What this review is — and what it is not

The Independent Living Home Review is a practical, non-clinical review of the home environment. It is not an Occupational Therapy assessment, medical assessment, building survey, fire-risk assessment or specialist accessibility assessment.

Local Family Links does not determine whether somebody is clinically safe to live at home, prescribe specialist mobility equipment or make clinical decisions. Where something appears to require professional assessment, Local Family Links will explain this and help identify an appropriate route where possible.
